Update Lore Story v1.1 — Expansion & Calibration
Added critical narrative details to deepen character development and clarify the timeline:
- Act III: Added Caroline's background as a soprano lead in her university acapella group to justify her later vocal ability.
- Act III: Restructured the timeline from a generic 3-year gap to a detailed 6-month corporate power struggle, tracing the power vacuum, office politics, and gradual degradation of relationship leading to the Morality Core coup.
- Act IV: Added a bitter, ironic toast ("For science") between Nolan and Rattmann on the Old Aperture catwalk before parting ways.
- Act VII: Explained GLaDOS's choice to retain her synthetic voice. Added her memory of her mother's deathbed Italian parting phrase ("Cara mia, addio") and her synthesizing her original human voice to sing the Turret Opera one last time.
Reflections on Human-AI Collaboration & Authorship
This backstory lore is the result of a close human-AI collaboration. However, it is essential to emphasize the role and efforts of the human author in producing the final piece.
The core ideas of this narrative have been slowly forming over the years since I first played Portal and Portal 2. Since then, I occasionally started thinking about what actually happened before the portal games began, up until the final day of writing it. I formed my ideas and discussed them with the AI. I initiated the concepts, asked targeted questions, filled in the logic gaps between incidents, and identified loopholes in the lore.
This is a human-centered, directed work. I led, supervised, provisioned, and approved every detail. It took me 3–4 days of intense thinking, research, and hypothesizing alongside multiple AI agents in very long conversations to piece the whole puzzle together. I actively participated in the entire process, and human creative expression was at a very high yield.
This was not a lazy human effort. I am highly confident that this piece of work is not something that could be produced by pure AI-led effort, nor by lazy human prompts. There are many parts that required real human creative input to chain together the whole presentation. It is clearly a human-led effort.
"At this point, the one song that pops up in my mind: Cara Mia... yes, the perfect ending song."
